Sweetest Taboo (Soca)ReblesSoundway Records re-issue the massively in-demand Soca cover-version of Sade's classic cut "Sweetest Taboo" by Caribbean band Rebles from 1986.In the late 80s, as electronic music permeated popular culture, Rebles helped define the soca genre outside of the Caribbean. Also known as D’ Rebel’s Band and led by St Vincentian band-leader and trombonist Denniston Young, the group were the 1980s house band for probably the largest Caribbean label, Strakers Records, based in Brooklyn, New York. Strakers released hundreds of Calypso and Soca releases over a thirty year period from 1970 to 2000.

John Wardle, alias Jah Wobble, came to fame in the late Seventies at the age of 20 as bass player for John Lydon’s first post-Sex Pistols outfit, Public Image Limited, following this with a series of collaborations with members of German avant gardists Can and U2 guitarist the Edge. He plays on today.He quit the biz and spent time in the Eighties driving trains on the London Underground. Happily, creativity won out and this show from 1992 is from one of a series of charity shows co-ordinated by New Musical Express at London’s Town & Country Club under the banner Viva Eight. Highlights include ‘Visions Of You’ from 1991’s classic ‘Rising Above Bedlam’ album, ‘How Much Are They?’ and the iconic ‘Invaders Of The Heart’ from which his group take their name. The performance includes percussion and exotic dancing, and is an audio-visual treat.

The songs deals with human connection and solitude in a life built upon faith. The lyrics depicts exposure and anxiety but also joy and belief among free church members, the complexity of the relationships in the community with its leaders and priests and - ultimately - God. The songs are mainly influenced by Swedish folk music, psalms and choral music.While being an heavy album, Gustafs' intention has still been to fill the listener with hope and light rather than the opposite. As usual with Blod, the approach has been to highlight the beautiful things in generally ugly contexts, something that has probably never been as evident as on Pilgrimssånger.Pilgrimssånger features guest apperances by Elin Engströmd and Anna Johannesson on vocals and percussion.
