Strut and Art Yard present another exclusive from the vast catalogue of cosmic jazz pioneer Sun Ra: a previously unreleased radio session most likely recorded at the WXPN FM radio studios in Philadelphia, 1974-5.This newly discovered session features a new version of Ra’s earlier ‘Island In The Sun’, a romping, raucous rendition of ‘Unmask The Batman’ and the first studio recording of ‘I’ll Wait For You’ There is no bass player on the sessions and Ra’s left hand beats out a rhythmic bass pattern on the piano. All tracks are remastered directly from the original tapes. The album package features a newly commissioned painting by legendary Bristol urban artist Guy Denning and new sleeve notes by Paul Griffiths.Recently discovered in the Sun Ra archive, the recording forms part of a series of sessions that Ra and the Arkestra recorded for WXPN-FM between 1974 and 1980. The ‘Antique Blacks’ album was recorded there in ’74. Based on the campus of The University of Pennsylvania, WXPN’s station manager Jules Epstein and music director Russ Woessner were instrumental in the exposure and recording of The Arkestra in their broadcast production studios. Geno Barnhart, founder of The Empty Foxhole concert collective, Jules and Russ broadcast an on-going series of jazz concerts covering a wide spectrum. The Arkestra performed at The Foxhole in Philly many times from 1974.

Paris, May 13th 1968. There was a general strike. One last plane left the runway, strewn with flaming oil drums. On board were three jazz musicians wondering whether they would be able to return home one day. But for the time being they really want to make it to Madagascar where concerts and workshops with young local musicians were waiting for them. Pianist and bandleader Jef Gilson was accompanied by his bassist Gilbert "Bibi" Rovère (Martial Solal Trio) and the young drummer Lionel Magal (Crium Delirium). Gilson, who already had a reputation for finding new talent (it was thanks to him that, amongst others Jean-Louis Chautemps, Henri Texier, Jean-Luc Ponty or Michel Portal first became known) was literally blown away by the standard of the young Malagasy musicians, all capable of imitating their American idols by ear. Their names were known only to jazz fans on the island; Serge, Allain and Georges Rahoerson, Arnaud Razafy, Roland de Comarmond, Joel Rakotomamonjy, Alain Razafinohatra, Samuel Ramiara... Gilson then had a vision: he wanted to encourage them to play jazz which was truly Malagasy and which would find its’ soul in the island’s culture and traditional instruments (Sodina flute, valiha, various percussion instruments...).He would go back to the big island three times, in March (with cellist Jean-Charles Capon), in October 1969 (alone), then in February 1970 (as a trio with guitarist Raymond Boni and drummer Bertrand Gauthier). The two trips in 1969 would lead to the sessions, recorded on a simple ReVox with two Neuman microphones, which would make up the essential part of this mythical album entitled "Malagasy", and first issued in 1972 on the Lumen label, and then reissued, as early as 1973, on Palm, Jef Gilson’s own label.Apart from the last track, recorded in Paris in 1971 with Malagasy instruments brought back from trips by the trio which would play on the avant-garde "Le Massacre du Printemps" (Futura), all the other compositions on the album are by Jef Gilson, Jean-Charles Capon and the young saxophonist Serge Rahoerson. There is also a cover of a song issued just a few months earlier and that the Malagasy musicians had only heard through bits and pieces played by Gilson on piano: the song is "The Creator Has A Masterplan" by Pharoah Sanders, and it is one of the most wild and mystical versions you will ever hear.In May 1972, Madagascar itself would be the theatre of youth revolt. And the composition "Avaradoha" by Serge Rahoerson, the second track of the first side of this album, would be the anthem of the revolution on the streets.

1967 descargas album by Peruvian percussionist Coco Lagos y Sus Orates, featuring Alfredo Linares, Charlie Palomares, Otto de Rojas, Mario Allison. This album was recorded following the success of the descarga sessions released by New York label Alegre Records. It includes a version of Cal Tjaders Mamblues and 'Brava pachanga', an original by the Father of Boogaloo, Joe Cuba, among many other stand-out tracks.Quality official reissue on 180g vinyl after years unavailable. Includes insert with liner notes.

Quand l’esprit anarchopunk des Beruriers Noirs rejoint le hip hop braillard des Beastie Boys, ça donne Stupeflip. Emmené par le terrible King Ju (personnage omniprésent dans cet étrange univers), MC Salo (chanteur à la voix caverneuse) et Cadillac (un vieux fou), le crou halluciné et plein d’humour balance un collage de rock détraqué (« Je fume pu d’shit ») et de rap musclé (« j’refume du shit », « L’Épouvantable Épouvantail »). Un mélange forcément explosif et complètement maboul sorti en 2003. Avec ce premier album éponyme, Stupeflip faisait irruption avec fracas dans nos enceintes. On n’en attendait pas moins, l’album est désormais culte.Édition limitée ultra collector en double vinyle vert gatefold.

Retrospective For Love is a satisfying new sound for a fresh generation of soul lovers. Après les célèbres compilations We Out Here sur les nouveaux talents Londoniens et Sunny Side Up sur la bouillonante scène jazz Australienne, Brownswood présente Indaba Is, une compilation de musique improvisée et de jazz sud-africains actuels. Le projet est le fruit d'une collaboration avec deux grands noms de la scène musicale sud-africaine, le pianiste/auteur-compositeur Thandi Nthuli et Siyabonga Mthembu de The Brother Moves On, qui agissent en tant que curateurs sur le projet. Les townships sud-africains étaient historiquement des lieux cosmopolites. L'apartheid confinait toutes les classes dans les mêmes lieux appauvris. Les migrations de tout le pays et de toute la région ont fait que les habitants des kasi maîtrisaient de nombreuses langues musicales. La musique d'église, la musique classique européenne, le jazz américain et les chansons pop de Liverpool diffusées par les stations de radio étrangères ont alimenté ce riche mélange. Indaba est né de toutes ses racines. Mais la communauté n'est pas sans poser de problèmes. Les fractures persistantes de la société sud-africaine ont été délibérément créées par l'apartheid, résultat d'une tentative d'imposer à tous des identités unitaires et construites sur une base raciale. Tous les morceaux de cette collection le contestent :ils démontrent la puissance unificatrice du travail musical collectif.
