Six albums deep and showing no signs of slowing, White Lies are taking things even more confessional than before on their new album As I Try Not To Fall Apart. Don't be fooled by the anthemic tone of the title track, which has been doing the rounds since the release was announced back in September - this is an album which looks inwards with unflinching honesty. From 'Am I Really Going To Die' to 'I Don't Want To Go To Mars', this is a record taking in the heaviness of the human condition in the modern age. Fortunately, such ominous portents go down much smoother encased in the shimmer of plush synth pop, and White Lies do that oh so very well.
New LP by New Zealand composer & guitarist Roy Montgomery in close collab with Emma Johnston’s angelic vocals. After Nietzsche is a response to Nietzsche's assertion in Twilight of the Idols that “Without music, life would be a mistake”. Roy Montgomery and Emma Johnston recast this as “Life is a mistake set to music” and they take issue with one of Nietzsche's principal tenets concerning fate. After Nietzsche is in a way the sister-album to last year’s Suffuse, where Montgomery composes songs for guest vocalists. Only this time it’s in close partnership with Emma Johnston. Montgomery's distinctive, interweaving guitar play is set as background for Emma Johnston’s angelic vocals & experimentations. Swimming through the four tracks of the album, it’s surprising to notice how different they are. The opening track could have been plucked from one of Montgomery’s 80s projects, while the rest of the a-side takes us into more shadowy territory, Realm Of The Senses with it’s slow strumming and echoing vocals evokes Grouper (who points to Montgomery as being an influence of her work) and the title track After Nietzsche with dramatic vocals and strings, cleverly builds up to a climax that never happens.
Morse from Montpellier (FR) offer us a second album of 11 rough tracks of bestial and sanguinary music.Recorded in August 2017 by Amaury Sauvé (Plebeian Grandstand, Birds In Row) and mastered by Serge Morattel (Knut, Year of No Light) in September 2017, this second full lenght opens the band to a powerful, energic music full of variations : from a massive and telluric sludge metal to a unbridled and imaginative noise hardcore exploring moods of ambiant guitars ...
41 years after its original release, it's hard to grasp just how revolutionary the New Age Steppers self-titled debut album was. The brainchild of the Slits' Ari Up and producer Adrian Sherwood, the set brought paired the cream of the post-punk scene (including the Pop Group's Mark Stewart and journalist Vivian Goldman) with a string of experienced dub-wise players to create a set that genuinely took dub and roots reggae in thrilling new directions (think alien noises, industrial sounds, experimental effects and squally guitar textures). Now available on vinyl for the first time since its original release, New Age Steppers is an album that should genuinely be in every serious music-head's collection.
