Paranormal Phenomena Le Discopathe Montpellier

Tapping into the seductive unease of the unexplained, Modula lands on Tartelet Archives with Paranormal Phenomena – The Icelandic Expedition, a nine-track album that evokes alien synth-electro and New Age soundscapes.

During a trip to Iceland in February 2020, Naples native Filippo Colonna Romano (Modula) experienced the raw power of the island’s otherworldly natural forces. Inspired by his field recordings and a rekindled interest in sci-fi, Paranormal Phenomena – The Icelandic Expedition was born. Steeped in haunting LA synthesis and cinematic tension, the album is an imagined soundtrack to a supernatural thriller, cast in the icy tones of the Roland JD-800.

“When I went to Iceland I was so excited about the ambience and sounds,” says Modula. “I felt everything was stronger than normal; the wind was brutal, the waves fast and noisy. I came to the conclusion that what I had captured all sounded strangely eerie and otherworldly. I decided to compose music that had the same vibe as the field recordings – cold and strange, mysterious and alien.”

The album includes nine tracks each representing a scene in the “movie” ranging from alien synth-electro to New Age ambient moods and soundscapes, inviting the listener on a journey through cold landscapes and into the caves where unknown creatures lurk in the shadows.

Paranormal Phenomena leads logically on from Modula’s previous work for Bordello A Parigi and Firecracker, not to mention his Alba – Tempesta – Notturno EP on Tartelet Records which drew on field recordings from the jungles of South America. Merging extreme environments with a rich palette of classic outboard gear, Modula’s music transports listeners through space and time.

Given the heavy motion-picture theme present in Paranormal Phenomena – The Icelandic Expedition, the album is a fitting release to inaugurate Tartelet Archives, a new sub-label to Tartelet Records focusing on electronic obscurities and sounds from the past.

The first single ‘Diamond Beach’ will be out February 16th on all digital platforms.

Paranormal Phenomena – The Icelandic Expedition will be out on vinyl and digital March 18th.

Francesco Messina is perhaps best known for his collaboration with fellow composer Raul Lovisoni on the album Prati Bagnati Del Monte Analogo, originally released on seminal Italian label Cramps in 1979. Along with contemporaries Franco Battiato, Juri Camisasca and Giusto Pio, Messina would help reshape the world of modern composition with an organic rawness and haunting beauty. In 1979, Messina was asked to perform at the Teatro Quartiere in Milan. As the composer writes in the liner notes, "Due to the limited availability of key technical features, it would have been too complicated to perform Prati Bagnati, and therefore I opted for these three pieces instead. We had never actually tried them all together, so I thought about renting a recording studio the previous afternoon. In that way, we could rehearse in a suitable place and use the opportunity to record the music on tape."Unreleased for over thirty years, and rediscovered thanks to Die Schachtel label (and included in their Prati Bagnati CD edition), the recordings on Reflex have an unadorned, almost improvisational feel. "Untitled" (featuring Lovisoni's plaintive flute) and "I Nuovi Pescheti" are full of meditative piano passages that lend an aura of new age, while the title track is more insistent with unfurling chords layered in real time via a reel-to-reel tape machine, resembling Steve Reich's mesmeric phase-shifting works of the '60s.A central figure within the Italian avant-garde, Francesco Messina gracefully expands his country's contribution to Minimalism. This first-time vinyl release is recommended for fans of Joanna Brouk, Luciano Cilio and Charlemagne Palestine.
Longtime Figure main-player Markus Suckut continues his artistic development with this killer seven track, wide-reaching EP. Based on the concept of providing rich ambient textures for the start of the night or DJ set, and then heavy, minimalist techno tracks to satisfy driving, percussive club needs, Suckut gives us another masterclass in his art. Alongside the dense textures of for start #1-3 and their varying moods - from echoing steam-filled passges to off-world strings reaching for the skies - we are also treated to four heavyweight DJ tools stamped with Markus trademark elegant sound.
Hell Yeah! Recordings has released all sorts of music over the years, but in recent times its' catalogue has becoming increasingly Balearic in tone. Here they further their nu-Balearic credentials via a four-track EP of tracks tailor-made for summer. If you're looking for well-known faces, Balearic legend Chris Coco joins forces with Micko Roche on the utterly gorgeous 'What is Love' (B2), while Max Essa predictably does a terrific job in turning The Vendetta Suite's 'Neon Secrets' into a saucer-eyed downtempo classic that draws much influence from late '80s New Order records. Elsewhere, Jaspar Robinson and Kayroy's 'Satellite' is a slow-motion affair where glistening guitars and hazy vocals tumble down across a slow-motion electro beat, while Feel Fly's 'Esperanto' would have sounded great on a Mediterranean beach in the mid 1980s.
Japanese multi-instrumentalist Masahiro Takahashi's latest album is a meditation on seasons and distance, recorded in isolation at his temporary home studio in Toronto. Following “the coldest winter I have ever experienced,” he began crafting hushed, lush vignettes of color wheel electronics with an array of software synthesizers, granular samplers, plug-in FX, MIDI controllers, and a shruti box.The songs sway, shimmer, and unspool in sparkling arcs, between reverie and lullaby, inspired variously by blooming apple trees, gagaku music, the “nostalgia of immigrants,” and longing for home. Flowering Tree, Distant Moon moves from soothing to surreal, a swirl of quiet melody and imagined landscapes, as transportive for its listeners as its maker: “I dreamt of places outside my room and traced the music from my memories.”

Worst records is proud to present the third release of its growing catalogue. Unlike hisalias could evoke, Christian Coiffure is not so much specialized in online hairdressingtutorials but has a fierce passion into brushing serious quality tracks. « Un Nouvel ÂgeRéminiscent » hits hard with its progression into sharp and colorful forms, never bound toredundancy. From slow EBMish , industrial tainted marching anthems of « A New NewHope » and « Slowly Merging Into One » to synth-infused acid railroads built for futuristicTrance Europe Express trains in « Révolutions Synchrones » and « La Dernière Volontédes Atlantes », everything functions as a toolkit for imagination. Add to this a breakyandrefreshing post-dubstep turn on « Biosphere is Reborn » alongside a deliciousheadshot surprise on digital bonus with « Pouvoir Lacrymal Renforcé », and you willnever see the word « coiffure » the same way again.
