Jaspar ROBINSON / KAYROY / FEEL FLY / THE VENDETTA SUITE / CHRIS COCO / MICKO ROCHE Buena Onda: Balearic Beats 2021 Hell Yeah Italy

Hell Yeah! Recordings has released all sorts of music over the years, but in recent times its' catalogue has becoming increasingly Balearic in tone. Here they further their nu-Balearic credentials via a four-track EP of tracks tailor-made for summer. If you're looking for well-known faces, Balearic legend Chris Coco joins forces with Micko Roche on the utterly gorgeous 'What is Love' (B2), while Max Essa predictably does a terrific job in turning The Vendetta Suite's 'Neon Secrets' into a saucer-eyed downtempo classic that draws much influence from late '80s New Order records. Elsewhere, Jaspar Robinson and Kayroy's 'Satellite' is a slow-motion affair where glistening guitars and hazy vocals tumble down across a slow-motion electro beat, while Feel Fly's 'Esperanto' would have sounded great on a Mediterranean beach in the mid 1980s.

As part of long standing Dutch label EPMmusic's 20 year anniversary series of releases, we have some rarities from the vaults of the one and only Karl O'Connor aka Regis. The Downwards chief offers up three powerful expressions in pure form techno, all in his idiosyncratic style. From the driving and hypnotic tribal groove of 'No Love From Above' on the A side, to B side cuts like the steely and austere tool 'At The Side Of Silence' and the pounding drums of the title track, which takes on a majestic form when those rousing chords gradually ease into the mix.
Tibor Szemző is not only a skillful and experienced Hungarian musician but also a media artist with a vast imagination. His last LP, ARBO X – Csoma Grooves, refers to his full-length film A Guest of Life released in 2006, for which he not only directed but also composed all the music. The film is inspired by the life of Alexander Csoma de Körös, a remarkable polyglot from the 19th century who set out from his native Transylvania to central Asia on foot to look for the roots of the Hungarian language. He reached Tibet, dedicated the rest of his life to study of Tibetan manuscripts and finally became the founder of tibetology. After 14 years Tibor Szemző decided to explore the theme further and composed the cinematic performance, Silverbird and the Cyclist, where he as narrator presented the story of Csoma from a different perspective.ARBO X is the music from this performance and it is based on the soundtrack of the original movie but the material has been restructured and enhanced by new layers. There are fourteen relatively short tracks on the album and each of them has a very specific character, sometimes mysterious as the titles of the tracks themselves. Their arrangement is ingeniously composed. Szemző’s typical bass flute and voice with percussion accompaniment on the first track Axis is a very impressive introduction to the whole album. The following tracks build up a series of colorful sound parables, which are in no way descriptive. Every element, whether it’s a double bass, viola, soprano voice, vocal trio or electronics, fits perfectly within the overall sound fabric with effective timing. Listening to ARBO X one unwittingly concentrates on interweaving details without loosing the sense of the whole. It’s certainly a great benefit, as in previous recordings, that most of the musicians participating in the recording of ARBO X are very familiar with Szemző’s music and his collaboration with some of them goes back to Group 180, a new music ensemble he founded in 1978 and soon earned international acclaim. This most recent album belongs among a long line of recordings that Tibor Szemző has released during his musical career and displays great compositional complexity and a keen sense of a perfectly balanced sound spectrum.Alexandr Krestovský

Switching RhetoricsFirst-ever vinyl edition of Shora & Merzbow’s split release Switching Rhetorics, originally published on CD in 2001, with remastered audio and updated artwork.Following the release of their acclaimed first record Shaping The Random in June 2000, Shora spent the next year touring and gigging around Europe, eventually reconvening in the studio in the summer of 2001 to record four tracks for a collaborative project with Japanese noise-meister Merzbow, a pairing initiated by Bisect Bleep Industries. The band’s sound had by that point coalesced into a tighter and arguably even more hard-hitting affair, however no less puzzling. The blistering first three tracks exude formidable confidence, embracing Dazzling Killmen-styled noise-rock and apocalyptic black metal alike, while maintaining all of Shora’s eloquent singularity. The drumming particularly shines throughout, with its multidirectional eruptions of seemingly pure kinetic energy. As its title suggests, the record’s grandiose and repetitive closing piece “To Further Confines” is a clear indication of the Swiss band’s desire to keep challenging itself and looking ahead. Completed with Merzbow’s extended psychedelic digital noise études, Switching Rhetorics is an era-defining record of genuinely great artistry.
