BEAM UP / BUKKHA Double Trouble 45 Seven Germany 45 Seven Germany

Dubious dub with a dash of dithery delay comes by way of bass comrades Beam Up and Bukkha, new stalwarts of Jamaica's everlasting dub movement. By any proportion, this is a straight up soundclash set to wax, courtesy of new pushers Seven45. Beam Up's 'Double Trouble' brings up the dub pace to a swung exercise in near-dancehall via domineering one-shots and sub bass, while Bukkha's 'Double Trouble' amps up the melodica, rasta grumblings and rimshots for a rumblier and more upbeat affair. Who won? You decide.

Dan Snaith's 27-track Fabriclive bounty just keeps on giving. Following the likes of "Face To Face" come two more outstanding dancefloor tracks. Rough around the edges, off-the-grid, visceral yet touching, "Hey Drum" hypnotises with an almost militant feel before suddenly switching into an outrageously uplifting breakdown while "The Truth" taps into the roots of Chicago with a footloose kickdrum and warm fluctuating synths. Both absolutely kill it - which you probably already knew anyway. Most of us have been counting down the day for this vinyl release since we first heard the Fabriclive mix.
To understand Didn't You Hear the soundtrack it's important to get a bit of the back story behind this obscure and genuine rarity. Didn't You Hear the movie was a little-known and unarguably strange 1983 cinema release that barely made it to many screens, but was notable for two reasons - it's one of the earliest acting credits given to Gary Busey, and it features one of the first all-electronic scores, by non-other than Canadian composer and synth pioneer, Mort Garson. The work still sounds impressive. For the most part it clearly feels like a film score, but some tracks more than stand up on their own grounds. The subdued chaos of 'Bamboo City' could be used by techno and electro DJs today, 'Virgil's Theme' is a reflective slice of melodic ambience, while 'Death Talk & Jeep Approach' is a sparse, minimalistic electronic-classical masterpiece.
The ‘Abroad EP’ catalogues a period of time spent travelling Japan in the spring of 2019. Throughout the course of the month-long trip, Rudy carried around a portable recorder, capturing various sounds that caught his ear. That collection of found sounds would eventually become the foundation for the EP, each track utilizing a handful of different recordings ranging from bird calls in Tokyo’s Yoyogi Park, to windchimes in the coastal town of Kawazu. The EP took a full year of patient, daily work to complete, during which time Rudy invited a diverse group of collaborators in to help finish the songs. Throughout the recording process, harp, saxophone, and violin parts were added to create a unique blend of organic and electronic sounds.
Serious history business: 'Some Justice' was the first time Micky Finn and Aphrodite joined forces and launched a partnership that would change drum & bass history. Prior to them linking, Urban Shakedown comprised of Aphrodite and Claudio Giussani who had a run of fantastically euphoric hardcore crossover records during that golden rave era. 'Some Justice' landed in 91 and the instantly goosebumping vocal cut 'Burnin' Passion' landed in 93. Both of them enjoyed these touch-ups in 94, which still sound fantastic today. Feel the burn.
