Le Discopathe - Montpellier - Tender & Sugar Mayann

Looking back to a great year, we find David K from the Freak'n'Chic posse being one of the most successful newcomers in 2006. Freak'n'Chic stands for a kicking mix of techno and acid sounds, which are blended with some house. DJ friendly, very danceable but still demanding, with elements of deep house and minimal house. This is also the direction of David's current tracks "Tender and Sugar" and "Mayann". Whereas "Tender and Sugar" seems straighter, darker and more minimal, and the fat but simple beat is the driving element, "Mayann" comes along with strong reerences to "Âme" and its synth sounds remind of "Rej" or productions of "Pasta Boys" from Italy, without denying David K's "Freak’n’Chic" handwriting. The spheric layers and weird percussion sounds make "Mayann" a real tech house monster. Is this a late highlight in 2006 or the first hit of the next year? Besides his releases, David K will give his live debut at the CocoonClub at the end of december.

Sharing passing similarities to two of modern indie hip-hop's top producers, Madlib and the late J Dilla, L.A.-based Warp recording artist Flying Lotus has created a darkly meditative fusion of debris and warmth, b-boy head-nod, and laptopper experimentalism out of static, texture, and rhythm.

BIRTHMARK / WITHDRAWN / SUNUN / VMO$ / BOOFYCL 002Cold Light MusicHand-stamped and numbered white label with A4 insert. Edition of 250Dank, modern Bristol trip hop vibes from scene regulars such as VMO$ & Boofy, plus new names Birthmark, Withdrawn, and Sunun, all rounded up by new label; Cold LightOne for the smokers and night owls, ‘CL002’ proves that the enervated energy of Avon’s bassy epicentre is still glowing like embers of an old fire, coming with the blunted shunt and bloo haze of Birthmark, who sounds like he’s got the flu on ‘Haunted’, before lending a slightly less sluggish turn on Withdrawn’s ‘I Have Known Rivers’. Sunun follows on the flip with a findus crispy cut of BoC-like flutes overgrown with vinyl crackle and a web of insectoid percussion, leaving VMO$ & Boofy to shut the lights off with a blushing crush of screwed R&B, Houston-via-Bristol style.
