Sunday Dinner On A Monday Speech Debelle Monday Sessions Records - MSR03V Hip Hop

British rapper Speech Debelle announced her fourth studio album, ‘SUNDAY DINNER ON A
MONDAY’, released on 9th June 2023, via Monday Sessions Records.

Speech Debelle won the Mercury Prize for her debut album ‘Speech Therapy’ in 2009,
beating the likes of Florence and the Machine, Kasabian and La Roux. Her 2012 Kwes-
produced sophomore album ‘Freedom Of Speech’ commanded further critical acclaim
expanding Speech’s captivating flair for poetic testimonies, playful narratives and dynamic
rumination on power, politics and pleasure. She innovatively accompanied her third album,

‘Tantil before I Breathe’ with a cookbook and memoir in 2017, expressing that ‘music and
food are art – they heal and inspire’.

Her highly-anticipated fourth album ‘Sunday Dinner On A Monday’ examines family, friends,
lineage, and ancestral DNA through the lens of afro-futurism. Tracks journey from smooth
soul to ‘ancestral rap’ and alternative hip-hop, and feature singles ‘Come Your Way’. ‘101010’,
‘Atlantis’ and ‘Away From Here’.
The album has been mixed and mastered by Grammy-nominated and MOBO award-
winning mixer and engineer Clinton McCreery (Enny, Kofi Stone, Manik MC), with writing
and production from Skripture (Will.i.am, Gregory Porter, Basement Jaxx), and collaborations
with Dem Drums, Jamaican production team Island Wav, Kensaye, and Mark Cake. It
includes features from English contemporary pianist and composer Neil Cowley (Adele,
Emeli Sande, Maribou State), Miss Baby Sol, Dylema, Alyesha Lei and Ruth Sax.
Celebrated for her ability to articulate a vulnerable honesty in contrast to her husky tones,
Speech (a semi-finalist on Celebrity Masterchef, cookbook writer, and podcaster) has been
influenced by the connection, comfort and culture that food allows us to explore. The South
London lyricist says of the title: “On a Monday, the Sunday dinner just tastes sweeter;
everything has time to marinate and settle.
“It’s about how we imagine and then create our own futures”, says Speech. “The album is about our journey through life as we learn from experiences that expand our senses. We learn internal management and get closer to ease. Some of us even become nourished, like
a good meal. This is THAT album.” - Speech Debelle

Full Dose kick your door in with this prime selection of cuts from a new name on the label: Tuck Chains. Who is Tuck Chains? Who knows! But with a crew known for their futuristic and dub-inflected sound, "Tapes" manages to take the label to new heights.Serving as a masterclass in the sacred art of sample chopping, Tuck Chains offers up a platter of instrumentals that wouldn't sound out-of-place coming from LA in the late 2000s. True to its name, FD013 feels like a mixtape in its delivery, but has a depth and refinement that's difficult to find. Instrumental hip hop of this quality may well have disappeared from the underground but Tuck Chains has successfully iterated on a style guaranteed to bring blunted energy."Lock Down", the opening track, quickly sets the scene with metallic and saturated drums. Interspersed with surgical sample chops, the track oscillates between lively and chill after an almost musique concrète sounding intro. This contrast between straight and faded becomes a theme of the album, with moments of intensification punctuating the mellow.Tracks like "Chrome and Glass" balance fizzy snares, rumbling low end and stabby piano hits to take you on a slow motion coastal journey, while "Ewan Hughes-Army" has an erratic and head-nodding feel that demands your attention. Warbly, downtempo tape vibes feature throughout the release, a combination ripe for repeated, couch-bound listens. With this in mind, "Spanish" feels like the perfect closer - the type of track that oozes sun and THC. Let this be the soundtrack to your hazy holiday.Arriving directly from the plant and mastered by the label's own Lvcchesi, this could well be the beat tape you knew you were missing!
"Papa ! Regarde, on voit la lune par la fenêtre. "Disque fait sur Terre. Tous les enfants, petits et grands, vous entendrez ici mon coeur sans stéthoscope. "There are not many things that can hurt me more than people stealing my music." Late last year, Soul Supreme announced in a formal statement that he was—and still is, while completing this record—in a legal battle with a Norwegian producer and a money-grubbing indie label. A case to reclaim ownership over his masters. Industry rule #4080 in full effect.People who know Soul Supreme, know he’s a music man at heart. So the silver lining of the lawsuit is that Poetic Justice emerged from it. After all, artists like Soul Supreme best express themselves through music. This is his way of coping with the dreadful situation; a heartfelt album to take you along for the ride.Mind you: that doesn’t mean that this is a moody listen coming from a place of frustration and resentment. Far from it. Soul Supreme is confident in his case and that shows in his work on Poetic Justice. The music moves, grooves, throbs, and hits more than ever before. With thematic twists and turns to express how he’s been experiencing the legal fight.“I have decided to create a positive outlet for what is a very negative event in my life,” he writes in the album announcement. “I wrote music that reflected how I feel going through this process. No matter what the legal battle results in—I know I have made something beautiful and honest out of this terrible experience. At least for myself but hopefully for others to enjoy it as well.”Stealing Soul Supreme’s music is one thing, but Poetic Justice shows that no one can take away his spirit.—Danny Veekens
