Short-lived all-female group Spoilsports were active from 1980 and operated in a world where jazz-rock, modern soul and post-punk all cross-pollinated with each other. One of their only early DIY releases now gets reissued by Freestyle Records and finds the members - who were all active in London's feminist and improvised music scenes - lay down a couple of political yet playful numbers. With Carole Nelson on keys, Angele Veltmeijer on saxophone, Sheelagh Way on drums, Lesley Shone on bass, Isabel on congas and Laka Koq providing vocals Spoilsports cooked up a real storm here.
Psychedelic cumbia, it might come as a surprise, is a favourite among many Juno users. That's why we keep restocking it; this isn't the first compilation of its ilk either. 'The Roots Of Chicha' is a compilation series that focuses specifically on the dreamier side of 60s and 70s cumbia, Andean folk, and Afro-Peruvian folk. The genre's popularity emerged from Lima's working-class neighborhoods, combining Western instruments like guitar and organ with traditional Peruvian instruments like the pan. Raw remasters of twangy guitars and rhythmic risings and falls are the object of the game here.
A limited pressing of early and previously unreleased recordings from New Zealand folk outlet The Strange Girls, a band that initially consisted of Clayton Noone, Kaaterama "Motty" Morehu and Jon Arcus, who left in 2002. The Strange Girls existed on and off from 1999 up until Motty's passing in 2019 and left behind a peculiar trail of gems scattered around on a myriad of limited lathe cuts, cassettes and CDrs. 'It's OK To Be Happy' starts at the very beginning with 'Satan', the first song at the first gig they ever played, which is a lo-fi, atmospheric droner. 'Girl by a Stream' is a personal favourite, the guitars are overflowing with emotion, and had me on the edge of my seat - a common feeling throughout the project, a mixture of somber longing and road trip headboppers. The package comes also with an insert with liner notes to each track by Clayton Noone themself..
Newcastle cold pop duo Troth have always been one to watch if you're on the pulse of the city's underground experimental scene, thanks to their dreamy sound, hypnotizing live sets and a propensity to induce zone-out states in whoever chooses to listen. Their latest LP 'Forget The Curse' carries the same lo-fi, folk and synthwave sensibilities as their rather obvious influence Hype Williams, building a clairvoyant dialogue between the vocals of Amelia Besseny and Cooper Bowman. Channelling the idea of dream logic into their music, we are further charmed into doing the duo's bidding, through such instruments as an affected sax and high-cut piano echoes ('Forget The Curse').
