After it became known that the Red Light Complex in Amsterdam had to close Gilb’R invited his friends Satoshi Yamamura and Abel Nagengast down for a session up in the Triangle studio. The trio dived in head first and with eyes closed. The night was buzzing with impromptu music, singing and poetry and one evening lead to another. The gathered results are a raw homage to it’s illustrious surroundings and can be listened to on an inspired 6 track 12”. The Babel EP is out on Versatile Records.
COLORE VIVO is a concept album with an atypical genesis: the idea was born from a sequence of images, as the soundtrack for a movie (never made) on the exploration of the uses and customs of archaic and mysterious populations. The soundscape he paints shows an extraordinary coherence in this. Bjondo is an artisan, as in the tradition of the great masters of the Italian Mondo Films, and it’s precisely to that manual knowledge, to that exploration and to those sounds that the disc is most recalled. The artist's research and his eclecticism translate into the wise use of rudimentary tools (bamboo, pieces of wood, stones, vases, necklaces and even a sort of self-made berimbau) to obtain unique and unclassifiable exotic sounds. His research on the evocative skills of primordial sounds breaks with the COLORE VIVO is a concept album with an atypical genesis: the idea was born from a sequence of images, as the soundtrack for a movie (never made) on the exploration of the uses and customs of archaic and mysterious populations. His research on the evocative skills of primordial sounds breaks with the narrowness of the genre and opens up to total experimentation. Each listening opens the window of imagination on other worlds. A dizzying look at the lost memory that is hidden inside each of us. A continuous (re) discovery! There's strong Gamelan music inspiration. Gamelan music can be describe as the traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali in Indonesia, made up predominantly of percussive instruments. The most common instruments used are metallophones played by mallets and a set of hand-played drums called kendhang which register the beat.
Great compilation with sought after tunes from South Africa by heavy weight artists like Stimela, Ashiko, Zoom, Ntombi Ndaba, Condry Ziqubu and more.. Tip!!In 1980s black South Africa a local form of pop music evolved as the disco boom died down and slowly mutated. It was often ubiquitously described as Bubblegum - usually stripped-down and lo-fi with a predominance of synths, keyboards and drum-machines and overlaid with the kind of deeply soulful trademark vocals and harmonies that South African music is famous for. Compilers Miles Cleret (Soundway) and DJ Okapi (Afrosynth Records) present a selection of 18 rare, handpicked 1980s cuts that highlight the period that nestles in between the ‘70s (where American-influenced jazz, funk and soul bumped shoulders with local Mbaqanga) and the ‘90s when Kwaito and eventually house-music ruled the dancefloors of urban South Africa. Alongside French-Caribbean Zouk this kind of music has slowly been making its way into the DJ sets of many of the most open minded selectors around the world. This compilation is in many ways a sister release to the hugely popular compilation of Nigerian boogie and disco that Soundway released in late 2016 : “Doing it In Lagos: Boogie, Pop & Disco in 1980s Nigeria”. The album takes its name from the band Ashiko’s track of the same name Gumba Fire that features on the compilation. The term is derived from gumba gumba, the term given to the booming speakers of the old spacegram radios that broadcast music into South Africa’s townships and villages. The phrase later evolved into Gumba Fire to refer to a hot party. Put this record on and feel the heat! Always a pleasure to get our hands on a fresh box of Empty Head Rich Heart goodness, and this even more so when there’s some Bristol action involved ! This deep blue ‘Shelter’ cut from Cold Light operators Gus & Dean aka Withdrawn, and the badass O$VMV$M remix have been on heavy rotation in O$VMV$M sets at Young Echo nights and around town for some time now, so it’s great to see EHRH do the honours and press the music up onto the 1&only 7″ format – pressed up in Hamburg, DIY style, and presented with heavyweight art by Bokeh Versions bossman Miles Opland.Stick on the clips for a taste, but let us tell you that those pads will be whirring around your brain for days to come – It’s a deep earworm and a really infectious rhythm, one that you’ll be coming back for in years to come.Edition of 100, vinyl-only.hand-stamped and numbered.Served with printed translucent paper DIY sleeve design by Bokeh Edwards.
Zeitgeber and L.B Dub Corp split the second in Stroboscopic Artefacts series of fifth anniversary records. Zeitgeber is the collaborative project of SA label boss Lucy and Dutch techno royalty Speedy J. Their joint alias birthed an exceptional long-player last year and has since been presented as a b2b act at festivals and clubs around the world. Totemism is their first officially released output since that album, and is every bit as compelling.
