Kalita are proud to unveil the Greenville, South Carolina-based Al-Dos Band’s unreleased 1976 gospel soul and disco album ‘Doing Our Thing With Pride’.Kalita has a fine record of unearthing holy grail records and reissuing them to rabid fans around the world. The latest is a real corker even by their standards - an unrelated album of soul, gospel and disco songs from Al-Dos Band. It is part of the first drop for Record Store Day 2021 and immediately melts the heart. 'Don't Come Smiling Back' is a deeply emotive slow jam with an impassioned vocal and pained chords, while 'Your Presence' is a much more rapturous and uplifting bit of musical worship, 'Some Things Don't Mean A Thing' is a robust and rugged bit of strident disco with magic funk riffs, and 'Love Jones Coming Down' is a real dance floor heater.

The Live Band, a disco-soul/jazz-funk outfit helmed by bassist and vocalist Kenny Chavis, released a swathe of singles and a sole album on The Sound of Brooklyn in the early 1980s. Perhaps their most potent track was 'A Chance For Hope', an emotive, two-part plea for change that opened their 1982 debut album. On this first ever seven-inch pressing the order of the tracks has been reversed, with the swelling, scene-setting orchestration and atmospheric field recordings of the shorter 'Prelude' version appearing on the flip. That leaves the main vocal version, a superbly soulful chunk of boogie-era dancefloor soul rich in addictive grooves, sweeping strings and eyes-closed vocals courtesy of Chavis, rightfully nestling on side A.The LIVE BANDA Chance For Hope (Record Store Day 2020)The Sound Of Brooklyn US
What began as a reissue of their long lost album Rude Movements by BBE in 2016, then the lost tapes of Mike Collins last year, has now led to more unreleased excavations from Brit funk pioneers SunPalace. Four in total, each track tells its own singular inherently UK tale; "Dancing The Night Away" is an upbeat disco thumper with shades of proto house creeping in on the choruses and "Love, Love, Love" hits with new romantic saviour faire. Meanwhile on the flip "If You Wanna Be A Beggar" fuses pub ready vocals, laced with hint of 80s boogie, over playful Afrofunk beats while "Somebody's Watching" closes on a Cure-like mournful funk note (albeit with slightly creepy lyrics). Sunny side up!
Hot Mustard executes an unpretentious yet decadent tasting menu in their debut offering, Mother Sauce. Featuring dry-aged drums chopped and blended into buttery bass lines, tangy guitar flavors mellowed by smoky, smooth 70s strings, and kickin’ brass trimmings by Antibalas’ Jordan McLean, the resulting beats are fat enough to clog your arteries. These rogue sauciers have been sonically schooled in the Stax and Atlantic tradition, and spent years studying the techniques of such contemporary masters as Chefs Raekwon and Rakim. This is the first course, foodies and musical gourmands. Service begins 9/3/21. Bring your appetites.
