It's been a long time since the UK jazz scene was as thriving and fertile as it is right now, and one of the most fascinating artists currently doing it is Emma-Jean Thackray. UM Yang is her long-envisaged project "dedicated to the Taoist philosophy of duality and harmony" and it has been record straight to vinyl, lending the sounds a real, visceral feel. The DJ, beat maker, trumpeter, singer and composer draws on all her skills to collide worlds here as she leads a septet into the unknown. Free jazz, wailing trumpets, deconstructed marching bands and so much more make for a dense tapestry of sound that leaves you spellbound.

Ulla roots her style in improvised jazz and blues on a very welcome follow-up to her entry for our Documenting Sound series, and the sublime ‘Tumbling Towards A Wall’ LPUlla offers more precious room to breathe and space to think on ‘Limitless Frame’, dispensing a broader palette of instrumentation to evoke finer, ephemeral feels with a more timeless appeal. Her sound appears more porous to influence from strains of wistful jazz and blues here, vacillating and morphing her dreamlike ambient purview between parts of signature, aleatoric ambient pads and rustling room recordings, along with more classicist or traditionalist turns of guitars, sax and keys that call to mind K. Leimer via The Remote Viewer. It’s a perhaps surprising change in the winds of her music, and one we’re very happy to follow.In the artist’s own words “I made this music as a way to hug myself” and listeners can trust that hug will extend to them, too. She spends the first half of the record wrapping us up in clouds of pads, processed strums and fractured melodies, whisked to a gentle peak in the keening swoon of ‘Chest of Drawers’ around the middle, while the second half unravels into gorgeous loner arrangements. She captures the most wistful sensations akin to Annie Hogan’s parlour keys on ‘Something Inside My Body’, and crystalline trickles of guitars in ‘Clearly The Memory’, with the softly pealing wind of ‘Walk Alone’ calling to mind Loren Connors and Daniel Carter’s ‘The Departing of A Dream.’

Percussionniste mexicain-américain et ancien membre du Sun Ra Arkestra, Francisco Mora Catlett a enregistré et sorti son premier LP solo en 1987 en tant que presse privée, mais la suite qu'il a enregistrée au cours des années suivantes avec une section de cuivres jazz élargie à Detroit a été mise en veilleuse pendant des décennies. Mélange panaméricain de rythmes afro-cubains hypnotiques, de batucadas frénétiques et de sambas enflammées, Mora I & II sont les saints graals du jazz latin, dirigés par un héros méconnu du genre. S'installant à Detroit après ses années passées avec l'Arkestra, Francisco s'est mis au travail pour ses débuts éponymes, rassemblant un ensemble de musiciens comprenant le claviériste Kenny Cox, fondateur du légendaire Strata Records, le bassiste Rodney Whitaker du Roy Hargrove Quintet et les percussionnistes Jerome Le Duff, Alberto Nacif et Emile Borde. La suite Mora II est enregistrée peu de temps après avec un line-up élargi qui comprend la légende de la trompette Marcus Belgrave, célèbre pour son travail avec Ray Charles, Charles Mingus, Hank Crawford, Eddie Russ et Wendell Harrison.

From there we’re taken on a journey through the syncopated slide of the jazzy ‘My Way, Your Way’, the samba sway of the mild and mellow ‘Easy Going’ and the poetic piano of ‘Pearl’, a triumphantly esoteric tone poem to close the A-side. ‘Señora’ ups the tempo on the flipside, galloping through tight triplets, fusion guitar and mind expanding synth play.
