Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra ft Josephine Oniyama

Badder Weather / As I Walk 7" (GOND07003)

Manchester based composer, arranger, producer, DJ and band-leader Matthew Halsall has carved out a niche for himself as one of the UK's brightest talents. His languid, soulful, beautiful music has won international acclaim and for his first ever 7" he revisits his 2015 masterpiece, Into Forever, selecting two classic cuts, featuring the great vocalist Josephine Oniyama to create an instant, timeless, classic.

Side A Badder Weather is deep and soulful built around a groove that never quits.

Side B As I Walk is a lush, soulful affair, featuring swelling strings and deep vocals.

Manchester based composer, producer, trumpeter, DJ and founder of Gondwana Records, Matthew Halsall is one of UK's most creative talents. A gifted trumpeter with a beautiful, expressive tone, his music has explored his love of the transcendental spiritual and modal jazz of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, as well as more contemporary dance music and electronica.

Detroit's finest Javonntte pulls out all the stops w his debut album, an exploration into the jazz fusion sounds forged in the Motor City.Javonntte toured w the late Aretha Franklin, and this album presents his first exploration into jazz and soul sounds forged by the late the queen of soul. An emotive and personal record which was recorded entirely in Detroit, the influence of the Motor City can be heard transcending through each track.Dripping with jazz, soul and funk, the album is a testament to Javonntte's mastery of both keyboard and bass with additional vocals provided by the man himself.
Comet Records presents from Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen, N.E.P.A Reissue LP Vinyl remastered and coming in an heavy Deluxe Tip-On Jacket. In 1979, Tony Allen decided to leave Fela Kuti & Africa 70 and moved to London in 1982. Originally Released in 1984 on Earthworks Records, this reissue holds an extra track previously unreleased on vinyl called “Olokun”. N.E.P.A (Never Expect Power Always) is a searing critique of the Nigerian Electric Power Authority, an organisation that governed the use of electricity in Nigeria. It starts out with the title track, with a definite Afro-beat punch. Electro-claps stand as part of the percussion line, adding to a more modern look at what Afro-beat was becoming. This is followed by an even further modernized piece of Afro-beat, as the title track is given a dub mix. “When One Road Close” has a similar pace, and is similarly followed by a dub remix, complete with the necessary space-effects reverb. And to make this reissue extra special the track “Olokun” was never released on vinyl before.Blending the nascent rise of electronica into Afrobeat production, it’s tighter than any Fela album and became a definitive project in shaping Allen’s future sound. Whether it’s the electro beats or the punchier, multilayered arrangement, it instantly stands out in Allen’s vast and expansive discography.

Influential jazz collective Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids return with their epic opus, ‘Shaman!’, featuring original 70s Pyramids member Dr. Margaux Simmons on flute Bobby Cobb on guitar, long-term associate Sandra Poindexter on violin, Ruben Ramos on bass, Gioele Pagliaccia on drums and Jack Yglesias on percussion. The band transitions from the political and social commentaries of 2018’s acclaimed ‘An Angel Fell’ into more introspective themes.
The Los Angeles jazz underground would have sounded mighty different without Flight 17 - the first appearance on record of the legendary Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. the legendary band was famously lead by founder and mastermind, Horace Tapscott, and this seminal album is now finally back on wax for the first time in 40 years. The Arkestra brought totters the local creative community and gave them free rein to express themselves and boy did they do that. Tapscott's hard-swinging piano opens the reduced and there is no let up from there: this is hugely energised jazz from another dimension.
