Queen of the Amazon' Dona Onete returns with her third album Rebujo which brims with joyous carimbós, samba, cumbia on vinyle

‘Onete is a songwriter fully alive to her world’ NPR

‘A powerful and emotional voice, writing bravely personal lyrics’
The Guardian

'Queen of the Amazon' Dona Onete returns with her third album Rebujo which brims with joyous carimbós and high energy bangues as well as a cumbia, brega and samba.

Rebujo is a local slang for the currents in the Amazon river that carry silt and nutrients from the river bed into the water, feeding its inhabitants and giving the river it's muddy colour – however, as it gives, it also takes, and the rebujo can easily overpower even the most experienced swimmer.

Following the critical success of her 2017 album Banzeiro, Onete is now one of Brazil’s most in-demand touring artists with a packed schedule throughout Brazil and an increasing global profile that has seen her perform at some of the most respected international music festivals such as Roskilde, Womad, TFF Rudolstadt, Rainforest World Music, FMM Sines and Chicago World Music.

Formerly a history teacher, folklore researcher, union representative, culture secretary and children’s author - “I never thought I would be a singer” she claims - Onete recorded her debut album Feitiço Caboclo at 73. A cult figure turned crossover success in Brazil and an ambassador for Amazonian culture, the music she sings is a unique mix of rhythms from native Brazilians, African slaves and the Caribbean - epitomised in the joyous carimbós that are her trademark.

Brilliant compilation of little-known African funk and afro-beat from mid-seventies Benin! The Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou are the undiscovered treasure of 1970s African music, and this compilation collects together the best of their 'secret' side-projects for little labels that were sneakily recorded when the boss of their main record label was away in Nigeria on business! These are the rarest records by the group and are also some of their best, as they were recorded with pasion for real music enthusiasts!Analog Africa are on a roll at the moment as this compilation follows hot on the heels of their essential African Scream Contest collection - and the packaging is equally lavish with a super-thick booklet full-to-bursting with notes, label scans, and archive photos!Very highly recommended!

** 2021 Stock. Edition of 150 ** Long-awaited return of Steve Marreyt, the grandmaster of psychedelic dronefolk-soundcollages. here he resurfaces with three long and impulsive tracks - mainly based on vocals and samples, but using the same direct and messy approach that made his earlier releases so unique. The entire A-side is taken up by an acapella lamentation for Herman Bisschop, the Dutch artist who passed away in the summer of 2018 and was a personal friend of Marreyt. The B-side thrives on samples, making it a more hectic listen, yet clear and oddly structured’-sounding for a Wappenhalter release. Definitely an adventurous but rewarding listen.
