En 1967, le monde occidental vit son Summer of Love alors qu'au même moment, le Nigeria sombre dans la guerre civile et voit naître une musique engagée et inédite. Porté par Fela Kuti, l'afrobeat, qui fusionne du funk, du jazz, de la musique d'Afrique occidentale, de la musique traditionnelle nigériane et des rythmes yorubas, s'engage en politique et secoue les consciences. Ce nouveau rock nigérian vaut à ses auteurs de nombreux séjours en prison, mais il participe aussi à la naissance d'un Nigeria moderne. Californian artist Diamond Ortiz makes his Neon Finger debut and in doing so brings plenty of his homeland's sunny soul to the fore. This magnificent 7" brims with West Coast influences and low riding beats. The original version on the a-side, '4 Really Tho', is all filtered vocals and squelchy boogie bass that is impossible warm and smooth. Dazzling chords and big hand claps complete the vital cut and then the flip removes the vocal and allows the majestic chords and bass to really shine. This sure is an essential cop for all funk lovers.
On previous instalments in their essential Jazz is Dead series, Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest's Ali Shadeed Muhammad have served up some super fresh and new takes on jazz for the modern generation. They have had help from the likes of Roy Ayers, Azymuth and Marcos Valle, all of whom have made it an essential series. Now they serve up a limited edition coloured vinyl release that offers a bunch of fantastic instrumentals. Those aforementioned big names all feature on these tunes which cover every style of jazz and then some.
