The 1977 album from legendary Brazilian artist, Tim Maia. A fusion of soul, boogie, disco and MPB, featuring ‘E Necessario’.

Maia released over 30 albums during his extensive and well-publicised career, touching on funk, bossa nova, disco, MPB, rock, soul and jazz. He was a driving force behind the introduction of soul, funk and disco from the USA into Brazilian music styles and was hugely influential in the 'Black Rio' movement in Brazil in the early ’70's.

This, his 1977 album, that epitomises that fusion of sounds and styles. ‘E Necessario’ has been a favourite of ours for many years; included on our Brazilian Beats Brooklyn compilation and released as part of our Brazil 45’s series.

The dynamic and festive BoOgAloO ZoO project is fusion of Jump and Blues riffs with African and Caribbean rhythms. This musical creation transports us back in time to the heady atmosphere of Brooklyn and New Orleans at the beginning of the Seventies.BoOgAloO ZoO is a brand new visual and scenic show that mixes music, improvisation, video, narration and song. It’s a journey that joins together sounds from greats such as Ray Charles, Lallo Schiffrin, Ray Berreto, Grant Green and Isaac Hayes. Phil JL Robert et 3Kindred Spirit spread the new world music word via two major musical forms of expression from the 20th century: Blues and Jazz. The driving force behind this project is a burning desire to revive the singularly enriched bright sounds of migrant people. Phil JL Robert et 3Kindred Spirit want to share this spirit with you to bring us all together with infectious joy and no little emotion, lest we forget.crédits
Sounds like it came out of Lagos in 1971, actually written and recorded in Lyon in 2015: Voilaaa is the brainchild of Bruno Hovart whose long relationship with Favorite goes way back to his days as Patchworks, Mr President and The Dynamics. Recording on a whole host of vintage machines and calling upon local African singers both cuts have a real authentic sense of realness; "Spies Are Watching Me" drives with big horns and swooning strings which isn't dissimilar to the work of The Movers, while the TY Boys-esque "Le Disco Des Capitales" is a heavier, more concentrated slab of floor-minded disco where the groove takes more of a forefront role.
Another killer release by Jazz Is Dead imprint, this time with the legendary compagnon of Gil Scott Heron, the OG Brian Jackson... One happy thing to be grateful for during otherwise trying times is finally getting to hear and enjoy new work by a man whose music is familiar to millions even if his name is less so. Indeed, Gil Scott-Heron continues to cast such a wide shadow that even many of his biggest fans often seem to forget that there's another name next to his on the bulk of his albums, the name of a man teamed up with Gil as a teenager and proceeded to ride out the decade as his writing partner, keyboardist, arranger, and bandleader for their Midnight Band. That man's name is Brian Jackson. His considerable backlog of unheard material reveals a stillenergetic and still-vital icon of the music wing of the Black Liberation movement. Prepare to hear from a musician whose work has contributed to the enhancement of all our lives in some form or another with the latest installment of the Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge's Jazz Is Dead series.
