Eritrean-born and Amsterdam-based singer-songwriter Rimon returns with her latest six-track effort, I Shine, U Shine. Rimon brings some rather high-profile friends along for the ride, tapping Denzel Curry for "Got My Back" and Darrell Cole for the title track. The Brkn Record is a new project led and produced by Jake Ferguson, the co-founder and bass player for the UK’s foundational deep jazz outfit the Heliocentrics. With fellow Heliocentrics co-founder and legendary drummer Malcolm Catto, Ferguson has been a regular collaborator with globally recognised artists including Archie Shepp, Mulatu Astatke, Melvin Van Peebles, Orlando Julius and many others. The Architecture of Oppression Part 1 represents Ferguson’s debut as a bandleader and orchestrator, and manifests as a committed and soulful response to ongoing and systemic anti-black racism, social oppression and state violence both at home in London and across the globe. Combining poetry, testimony and song with rich and cinematic backdrops, Ferguson has produced a sui generis sound that conjures flavours of Arthur Verocai, Ennio Morricone, classic library productions, Madlib-style deep-jazz beat science, and psychedelic soul. With bandmate Malcolm Catto on drums, Ferguson draws on their long years of collaborative experience in the Heliocentrics to build an album of striking texture and depth. But the album does not only reflect Ferguson’s full-spectrum musical prowess, experience and vision. It is equally a manifestation of his longstanding and high-profile work as a frontline activist for racial justice and social equity in London and beyond.
this newly mastered vinyl picture disc lp celebrates the album’s 40th anniversary.donna summer gained prominence during the 1970s disco era, propelled by her incessant and creative driving force behind the genre’s global popularity, rightly earning the title “queen of disco” and becoming one of the most successful recording artists of the entire decade, now having sold more than 130 million records worldwide donna was the first artist to have three consecutive double-albums reach no. 1 on the us billboard charts and also became the first artist to achieve four no. 1 singles in a thirteen month period. donna summer became the first artist signed to the new geffen records label in 1980 and released her first album - ‘the wanderer’ - for the label in the same year. the second album released for the label was this 1982 classic ‘donna summer’, which saw her enter new territory, with production duties by quincy jones. this proved to be a masterstroke, as the next album that quincy produced was michael jackson’s ‘thriller’. the album’s r&b/pop dynamic featured a ‘who’s who’ of the recorded music industry, from the album’s lead single ‘love is in control (finger on the trigger)’, to the all star chorus on the jon & vangelis written ‘state of independence’, the beautiful ‘the woman in me’, the james ingram vocal harmonies on ‘mystery of love’, the bruce springsteen-penned and performed ‘protection’ and ‘(if it) hurts just a little’, which was heavily sampled in 1999 by cassius in ‘cassius 1999’.
