In classic Sun Ra fashion "Angels And Demons At Play" collects recordings made 4 years apart (1956 and 1960) but still sounds like a perfect, cohesive album. That's the beauty of the Arkestra, though it lasted decades and featured dozens of different musicians, Sun Ra's unique vision maintained a free-form order that unified all the various incarnations and countless recordings into a whole. Featuring Arkestra mainstays like Pat Patrick, Marshall Allen, Ronnie Boykins, and John Gilmore, Angels And Demons At Play features mostly shorter tracks, in a swinging and dark mood that exemplified Ra's late 50s work.
Real Gone is doing a fine job of reissuing some of the most important jazz to have ever been recorded. It was all on the Black Jazz label and the man involved in much of it was Doug Carn. His Revelation album is one of the most iconic of them all, but Infant Eyes reaches similar heights with its spiritual sounds, dense arrangements and the impressively acrobatic and elastic vocal work of his wife Jean Carn. Her soulful sounds range from lung busting to carefully controlled, almost spoken, while plaintive pianos, smoky sax and tumbling drums all provide the fitting framework for this most comprehensive of jazz albums.
FINN LOXBO / KARIN JOHANSSON - "VENT" - LPVENT - Omlott MLR022New Duo LP from Finn Loxbo (Guitar, Electronics, voice) and Karin Johansson (Piano, Accordion)Artwork by EKTA.in a rain forest of moments. the eye hears what the ear sees. through each moment of karin johansson’s and finn loxbo’s music runs the firm conviction that all points and layers of sound – in true democratic spirit, carry the same weight. or lightness. as precise as scattered bird calls may be crucial to the totality and the outcome of the drama as a whole, as cautiously do they take care of the phrased line by being extremely exact with the gaps and the charged rest, where that very thing appears in just the right moment. an archetypical weave of strings being pulled and plucked further into our audible and visible listening. as a natural relief, the metal tongues from the accordion emerge and end up in new weightless states together with electronics and space. to suddenly whirl on in a dance for prepared piano and guitar that later just disappears out in the impossible where everything before was possible for thirty-one minutes and one second.Sten Sandell, stockholm may 2018
High Pulp are an 8-piece band that emerged from the Royal Room, a legendary Seattle Jazz club where they held “Funk Church” jam sessions in 2017.Their signature sound is a Psychedelic fusion of Hip-Hop, Funk, Jazz, and Soul which come together with complex, well thought out arrangements and progressive style. After successful sessions and premieres with prestigious station KEXP, and being at the forefront of the Seattle music scene, they’re now ready to branch out and take their sound worldwide. With 3 volumes planned covering some legendary artists and composers, Mutual Attraction Vol. 1 starts out on a spiritual jazz journey. Three iconic musicians are covered: Pharoahe Sanders, Sun Ra, and Alice Coltrane. These artists have woven their influences into the DNA of High Pulp and are by no means an easy group to tackle, but the band manages to do so with forward thinking grace. The project features rich textures and cinematic grooves alongside trippy guitars, lush Rhodes keys, and soulful horns. With their refreshing take on improvisational 60s and 70s-inspired music, there just aren’t many bands making music like this right now.
